Missions

At the heart of Jesus' teaching was the missional command to love God, to love our neighbors, and to make fully devoted followers of Jesus:

"The most important commandment is this: 'Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.' The second is equally important: 'Love your nieghbor as yourself.'"
                                                        Mark 12:29-31 New Living Translation

"Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey the commands I have given you."
                                                   Matthew 28:19-20 New Living Translation

Here at Wilshire Avenue, we seek to live these commands both locally and globally. Through the following opportunities for local service and global mission, you can get involved in the "Great Commission" that Jesus gave us.

LOCAL OUTREACH
Coming Soon - Heart of Downtown Food Bank
We have started the process to open our own food bank to help people achieve self-sufficiency by providing temporary assistance with food to individuals or families regardless of race, age, disability, gender, immigration status, national origin, or religious belief.

Serve Day - We converge on Southern California with other churches to serve our communities and love our neighbors. This year, SERVE DAY was July 26. Dozens of projects from painting, cleaning parks, gardening, assisting at Senior Centers, stocking and sorting food at local food banks provide opportunties for service all or part of the day.

SHORT TERM MISSION TRIPS
Our goal is to have 20% of our congregation actively involved in short term mission trips each year. In 2008, we will have sent people to New Orleans, Mexico, on two trips to Guatemala, and the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky. Past trips have included Africa, Washington, and New York.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
We financially support local outreach organizations such as Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Services and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship as well as global organizations such as Colina de Luz, an orphanage in La Gloria, Mexico, and our missionaries in Africa, Guatemala, Thailand and Asia.
